Giant wooden beehives in St Davids and Ferns cathedrals unite art, heritage, and sustainability to celebrate the vital role of bees.

Today (May 20th) is World Bee Day, a global celebration of the tiny pollinators that have an outsized impact on our world. In the smallest city in the United Kingdom, St Davids in Pembrokeshire, three towering wooden skeps inspired by traditional medieval beehives are housed at St Davids Cathedral. Created by North Walian artist Bedwyr Williams as part of the Ancient Connections project, these striking sculptures honour the historic link between Pembrokeshire and County Wexford in Ireland.Crafted from Canadian cedar wood by a Liverpool theatre fabrication company, the skeps are more than just art, they’re fully functioning beehives. Local beekeeper Gayle Twitchen tends the colonies living within them, producing honey that’s sold at the cathedral. Each jar features labels designed by local schoolchildren, bringing a community touch to the sweet harvest. An identical set of skeps stands at Ferns Cathedral in Ireland, symbolising a living connection across the Irish Sea and encouraging cross-border honey exchanges. This blend of art, heritage, and sustainable beekeeping celebrates both tradition and environmental awareness.World Bee Day, established by the United Nations and observed every May 20, highlights the vital role of bees and other pollinators like butterflies, bats, and hummingbirds. These small but powerful creatures support 90% of wild flowering plants and 75% of global food crops, yet they face increasing threats from human activity. Protecting pollinators is essential, not just for biodiversity, but for global food security.
